MTB Flat Pedals

MTB Flat pedals are essentially just a platform for each foot. They’re double-sided, so it doesn’t matter which way up they are and there’s usually some extra grip provided by strategically placed pins. Pin height varies, the longer can be better but not so much for your shins if you have an off.

The bigger the pedal’s face or platform, the greater the area you have to plant your foot and the greater the contact between you and your bike. There is a trade-off, that being the bigger the pedal, the greater your chance of pedal strike so you need to be mindful of this.

Flat pedals let you move your feet about as you please and are preferred by some riders on technical terrain as a result. For people new to the sport, they reinforce the use of good technique when riding, so it’s great to start on flats and then transition to clipless if you ever desire.
